What Can Trigger a Migraine?

Hi Neurocurious! Migraines are more than just headaches — they’re complex neurological events that can cause intense pain, nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, and even visual disturbances. For many people living with migraines, one of the biggest challenges is identifying what triggers them.

Recognizing your personal triggers can be key to preventing attacks and improving your quality of life.

1. Stress

Stress is one of the most common migraine triggers. Emotional tension, anxiety, or even sudden relief from stress (like after finishing a big project) can trigger an episode. Learning relaxation techniques — such as deep breathing or mindfulness — can help reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines.

2. Sleep

Too little or too much sleep can both provoke migraines. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and avoiding drastic changes (like staying up too late on weekends) helps stabilize your brain’s rhythms.

3. Hormonal Fluctuations

For many women, migraines are linked to hormonal changes related to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or menopause. Keeping a migraine diary can help identify whether your symptoms coincide with hormonal shifts.

4. Sensory Stimuli

Bright lights, loud noises, or strong smells can trigger migraines in sensitive individuals. Sunglasses, noise-reducing headphones, and avoiding overly perfumed environments can be helpful.

Migraines are highly individual — what triggers one person may not affect another. The key is awareness: keeping a symptom diary and identifying patterns in your daily routine can empower you to take control of your migraines.

These are just some of the triggers you should watch out for if you suffer from migraines. In the next blog, we’ll talk about additional triggers and practical strategies to manage them effectively.
