Sleep Apnea: What Most People Don’t Know 

When most people hear “sleep apnea,” they think about snoring. But as a neurologist, I think about something very different: your brain repeatedly losing oxygen throughout the night.

Sleep apnea is not just about how you sleep—it’s about what your brain goes through while you’re trying to rest. This condition causes breathing to stop and start multiple times during the night, and each time that happens, oxygen levels can drop. Your brain immediately reacts by briefly waking you up so you can breathe again. The problem is that these awakenings are often so short that you don’t remember them. Still, they can happen dozens or even hundreds of times per night.

So even if you believe you slept, your brain didn’t truly rest.

Instead of restoring itself, your brain spends the night in a state of stress, constantly responding to interruptions. This leads to fragmented sleep and a loss of deep, restorative sleep cycles—the ones your brain depends on for memory, focus, and emotional balance. Over time, this starts to show up during the day in ways many people don’t immediately connect to sleep.

Patients often describe feeling mentally foggy, forgetful, or unable to concentrate. Others mention morning headaches, low energy, or irritability that seems out of proportion. Many assume it’s stress, a busy lifestyle, or simply getting older. But in reality, their brain has been working all night instead of recovering.

One of the most important pieces to understand is oxygen. Your brain relies on a constant supply of it, and when that supply is repeatedly disrupted, it can affect how efficiently your brain functions. Over time, untreated sleep apnea has been associated with reduced cognitive performance, increased risk of stroke, and long-term changes in brain health.

What makes this even more important is how common—and underrecognized—this condition is. Sleep apnea doesn’t only affect one type of person. It can be present in people who don’t realize they snore, in women who are often underdiagnosed, and in busy adults who normalize feeling exhausted.

The encouraging part is that sleep apnea is both diagnosable and treatable. When properly managed, many patients notice meaningful improvements in their energy, focus, mood, and overall clarity. In other words, their brain finally gets the rest it has been missing.

If you consistently wake up feeling tired, foggy, or like your brain never fully resets, it’s worth asking a different question. Not just how many hours you’re sleeping—but how well your brain is actually resting.
