Classifications of Epilepsy

Hi Neurocurious,

When we talk about epilepsy, one of the first things I explain to my patients is that not all epilepsies are the same. The type of epilepsy you have determines how we manage it and what kind of seizures you might experience.

Epilepsy is generally classified based on where seizures start in the brain and what causes them:

1️⃣ Focal Epilepsy

Seizures begin in one specific area of the brain.

Symptoms depend on the part of the brain involved — they may include unusual sensations, repetitive movements, or changes in awareness.

2️⃣ Generalized Epilepsy

Seizures start on both sides of the brain at the same time.

They can cause sudden loss of consciousness, muscle stiffness, or jerking movements.

3️⃣ Combined Generalized and Focal Epilepsy

Some people have both focal and generalized seizure types — a reminder that the brain is complex and unique for every person.

4️⃣ Unknown Epilepsy

Sometimes, despite tests and imaging, we can’t identify where the seizures begin. This classification helps guide further evaluation and testing.

Whether the cause is genetic, structural or unknown, understanding your brain is the first step toward control and confidence.

Remember: Managing epilepsy is not just about medication; it’s about awareness, support, and finding what works for you.
